Some grants aimed at improving welfare for laying hens have been announced, with applications anticipated to open at the end of June.
The grants are available to people with over 1,000 birds. There are two sections.
Veranda only projects to add a veranda onto existing laying hen or pullet housing, with applications from July decided on a first come first served basis for grants of between £5,000 and £100,000 based on 40% of eligible project costs;
To fund replacement or upgrade /refurbish existing laying hen or pullet housing; this is referred to as a ‘comprehensive’ project, with applications expected to be from October 2024. This will be for grants of between £15,000 and £500,000, also based on 40% of eligible project costs, and will be decided via a competitive scoring system.
The successfully funded projects will:
improve laying hen and pullet health and welfare
increase environmental sustainability
introduce innovation
